The RTM Rescue Story
The History of RTM Rescue
RTM Rescue was born in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in September 2024. What began as a simple text message quickly became a movement of men determined to help their neighbors in a time of great need. After witnessing firsthand the devastation across Western North Carolina—including washed-out communities, destroyed homes, and families who had lost everything—our founder and chairman, Stephen Thomas, sent a message to a group of men asking a simple question: "Who is willing to come help?" Within days, dozens of men took time off work, loaded up chainsaws, shovels, and equipment, and headed to the mountains to serve.
What started as a small volunteer effort quickly grew into a large-scale relief operation. RTM Rescue established a base camp in Black Mountain, North Carolina, serving as a hub for volunteer deployment, supply distribution, and meal service. Teams of men were dispatched daily into some of the hardest-hit communities to clear debris, restore access to homes, and assist families as they began the long process of recovery. Alongside these work crews, RTM operated a general store providing essential supplies and a kitchen that served hot meals, coffee, prayer, encouragement, and hope to those affected by the storm.
Over the next ten months, more than 750 volunteers from across the country joined the effort. Together, they completed 326 work orders, built 7 tiny homes, served more than 27,500 hot meals, distributed over 90,000 pounds of food, provided generators, water, propane, clothing, blankets, and shelter supplies, and helped thousands of families begin rebuilding their lives.
Through it all, RTM Rescue embraced a simple mission: Rescue. Recover. Rebuild. We believe disaster relief is about more than clearing debris—it is about restoring hope, serving with compassion, and demonstrating the love of Christ when people need it most. Today, RTM Rescue stands ready to deploy wherever disaster strikes, mobilizing ordinary men to serve their neighbors in times of crisis.
